Fun Family Outdoor Games

With Summer here, there are more outdoor family get-togethers. And that means fun family outdoor games. When my family gets together the game of choice is either horseshoes or the cornhole game.  Another favorite is washers. Whatever game they choose it’s fun for all. I personally love sitting on the sideline watching.  The bantering between teams becomes hilarious at times. My husband and oldest grandson (he’s 20) have a friendly competition going no matter what game they play. My grandson is always trying to best “grandpa”. Sometimes he does and sometimes he doesn’t.

Cornhole Game

We had a recent family gathering to celebrate my youngest granddaughter graduating from 8th grade. Boy, it’s hard to believe she will be a high schooler.

Of course, the corn hole game had to make an appearance.

Some also call this game the bean bag game. There is a board set up across from each other. Each person/team has 4 bags and the object of the game is to try and get the bags either on the board or in the hole. You get 1 point if you get the bag on the board and 3 points if you get it in the hole. But it depends on the other team whether you get to keep your points. The points of one player cancel out the points of the other player that way only one player/team can score.  This is called cancellation scoring.  The first player/team that scores 21, wins.

The Bags

The bags are made of durable fabric and are filled with either corn feed or plastic pellets. They are 6 inches square and weigh from 14 to 16 ounces. We live in a rural area with lots of varmints so my husband wanted bags filled with plastic pellets. No need for the raccoons tearing the bags to get to the corn feed.

The Boards

The board has a 24×48 in scoring platform with a 6 in. hole that is 6 in from the top of the board. The two boards are set 27 ft across from each other.  Of course, some in my family just have to follow the rules but the younger ones can’t throw that far so there are some concessions that have to be made.  You can’t please everyone. Find the official rules here

My son made the boards above.

He also made a set for my husband for Christmas. My daughter-in-law did the painting on my husband’s boards.

They were not set up so I got a picture of just one.

I think he did a wonderful job.  What do you think?  Of course with lumber prices so high at the moment these boards are not cheap to make. But he didn’t make the bags.  They were ordered from  Amazon.

My husband just loves to play this game.  His other favorite game…. Horseshoes.  We are planning a family get-together for Father’s day and I’m sure he will set up his horseshoes as well as the cornhole game. So stay tuned.

If you don’t know of anyone who is as handy as my son you can get this game here

Have you ever played the cornhole game?  If so you know how fun it is to play.  If not you need to play it.

This summer at your next family gathering, give this family outdoor game a try.

You will find out just how fun it is.  Just think of the memories you will be making. Family getting together, good food, and good times.  What could be better than that? I can’t think of anything. For something good to eat check out my mashed potato salad recipe.
